Sven Gales & Sam Besch

C.A. Dudelange and the whole sports world in Luxembourg are in a deep grief. On Friday July 21st, in the morning when driving to the work, Sam Besch (19) and Sven Gales (20) found death in a tragic car accident. Not only were they most talented and hard training athletes, but also always nice and good humoured guys.

Both have been long-term friends, as they already met as kids in gymnastics, where both were counting among the best of the rising generation. Sven switched over to track and field in 1994, where he very quickly demonstrated special talent for short distances and hurdles. Sam came to athletics around 1996, after having known several injuries in gymnastics. Already at the first training, he knew he had to become a jumper.

Only three weeks before, during the National Championships, Sven qualified for next year's Games of the Small European States in San Marino by realising the minimum on the 400m hurdles event with a new personal best of 53"20. He got twice vice-champion (400m hurdles and 110m hurdles).

During those same Championships, Sam managed to get his second title of Champion in high jump, in his second contest this year after an injury in his ankle. Last week, he realised 2m for the first time this season during the Dexia Highjump competition. His personal best was 2.06m realised in 1999.

With the death of Sam and Sven, the CAD loses two of its most valuable athletes and boys.

We do also want to remember in this painful moment CAD athlete Luc Weber, who also died in a tragic car accident 4 years ago, and CAD athlete Mireille Hermann, who died in 84 after a training accident.

To the two families we present our deepest compassion.

Sam and Sven, we will never forget you!!

4. Lux-Cup – Meeting in Düdelingen - Der absolute Tiefpunkt ist erreicht …

by "e.t." published in the Tageblatt edition 24th July 2000 (in Luxembourgish)

Zwee vun onse Komeroden sin iwert de Week-end op eng tragësch Art a Weis ëm d’Liewe komm. Vill Sportler déi op dem "esou schlecht besaate Lux-Cup Meeting" gemëllt waaren, hun dun erklärt aus Respekt virun déenen verstuerwene Kollegen nët starten ze wëllen. Esou ée Geste verdengt Unerkennung a weist wéi déif am Sport eng Frëndschaft géet, wei onbeschreiflëch geschockt mir all sin iwert dem Sam an dem Sven hiëren Doud.

Wann dann ée gewëssenen "e.t.", ( vun deem mir unhuëlen datt hien och de Schreiwer ass vun engem homage posthume un de Sven an der selwechter Zeitung dée selwechten Daag ), a sengem Artikel "Der absolute Tiefpunkt ist erreicht …" mengt , éen déplazéierten Kommentar iwwert de Meeting vun e Samsdeg zu Diddeleng maachen ze missen a vu wéinegem Engagement vun onse Sportler ze schwätzen, da fanne mir esou eppes déplazéiert, gefillslos a skandaléis.

Wéi sou oft kann éen do nëmme soën: si tacuisses, philosophus …, opschons daat an dësem Fall nët esou einfach ass.

Chantal B., Sheila M., Danielle L., Jett W., and all the other athletes and coaches from the CAD.
