Reviews of the 2004 edition

2.24m in the rain!

Brazilian J. de Lima wins with 2.24m

Unfortunately the weather had a big impact on the overall performances. The rain started at 2.10, and continued for the rest of the competition. On the wet ground, Aleksey Dmitrik slipped and came to fall just in front of the high jump mat. The accident looked quite shocking, but fortunately, as we learned today, the injury is not too severe, and he should be able to resume competition quite soon. All the best to him from this place!

The incident did shock most of the other jumpers, and thus it is clear that the other athletes tried to minimize the risks. Only two jumpers passed 2.15, Tora Harris, the winner of 2001, and Brazilian Jesse de Lima.

At 2.20m, Tora missed three times, whereas Jesse did not seem to have been impressed by the earlier incident, and cleared 2.20 in his first attempt. For the next height at 2.24m, he missed the two first attempts, but showed a very nice third jump, clearly mastering the height. He then simply wanted to improve his personal best from 2.27m (which he jumped already twice recently) to 2.30m. However, the slippery ground retained him from taking the necessary 120% risk to pass the bar...

The only FLA athlete, Asmir Mirascic, entered very well into the contest, but had then three misses at 2.00m.

T. Novoseltseva jumps 1.91m

R. Dubnova and M. Melova complete the podium

During the ladies' competition, the weather conditions have been far from perfect, but at least there was no rain. This allowed very good individual results.

No less than 5 athletes passed 1.85, a height where unfortunately double winner Birgit Kähler showed difficulties and failed three times. Both Tatyana Novoseltseva and Diana Laznickova skipped the next height of 1.88m, whereas Romana Dubnova, Maria Melova and Daniela Rath continued. Maria had only entered the competition at 1.85m, Daniela was not at her best because of her foot injury she has been experiencing in the last weeks. Both athletes from Bayer Leverkusen missed three times, Romana passed 1.88 at the third attempt - the podium was not yet clear.

At 1.91m, young Tatyana Novoseltseva (currently world rank 10) showed an amazingly clear first attempt. Romana and Diana failed three times in a row. The winner was now clear, and Tatyana could choose her next height: she wanted to jump 1.95m, 1cm below her personal best, and which would have been a new meeting and stadium record. However all the support of the numerous spectators could not help her, but at least the third attempt showed that this young athlete has a very high potential.

On the national side, both Carole Kieffer and Kim Reuland did a good competition by jumping 1.65m, especially Kim who only stayed 1cm below her personal best during her first appearance.
